What should you know about lubrication for firearms Apr 14,2022

The purpose of cleaning a firearm is to get rid of any non-base metal contaminants (except for any applied finishes). This comprises carbon fouling, dirt, debris, oil, and grease, as well as lead and copper residue, and it needs the use of a specialized solvent.

Lubrication for firearms is solely for the purpose of reducing friction between moving parts. Lubrication reduces friction between moving metal-on-metal components, resulting in smoother operation and less wear. Typically, one or two types of lubricant—oil or grease—are used in firearms, depending on the manufacturer's recommendations.

Because oil has a lower viscosity than grease, it flows smoothly and provides little to no resistance to moving parts. For components with tight operational tolerances, such as fine trigger assemblies, bolt internals, slides, and firing pins, oil is often the appropriate lubricant.

When we talk about weapon protection, we're only talking about keeping rust and corrosion away from gunmetal. Because even brief exposure of raw, untreated metal to the atmosphere can start the rusting process, guns should always have a protective coating on their metal parts.

The issue with utilizing most CLP formulations as a rust preventative is that they promise to be able to combat rust. The bluing on blued gunmetal, on the other hand, is rust. So, do you wish to protect your blued (controlled corroded) handgun with a rust-fighting coating year after year? Absolutely not; otherwise, the blued finish will deteriorate to the point where it can no longer give the rust-preventative function it was designed to provide.

A pure petroleum-based product is appropriate for daily and short-term protection (less than 30 days). We recommend a mild, food-grade mineral oil because it is affordable, widely available, and consistently effective. Using jag and cotton patches, carefully remove the grease, then run a patch of light gun oil or mineral oil through the bore for routine cleaning operations.
